Canyonlands

Canyonlands National Park is centered on the meeting of the Green River and the Colorado River. These two deep canyons separate the park into three plateaus. We visited the Island in the Sky section.

We were surprised to find that Canyonlands has arches, too. Later we learned that there are hundreds of natural arches; they are not all in Arches National Park. Here is Mesa Arch. c-14t.jpg (3068 bytes)
Our first stop was Aztec Butte. Stephanie had read that there were Anasazi artifacts on the mesa. So we climbed the 500 feet or so to the top, and found an ancient old hut. If you squinted real hard, you could see a picture of a bison that had been painted on this wall hundreds of years ago. From the elevation, the view of the Green River Canyon was spectacular. c-31t.jpg (4081 bytes)

Then we moved onto Grand View Point at the tip of Island in the Sky. Here we can see the junction of the two rivers. d-19t.jpg (2689 bytes)
We liked the view so much, we took a group picture. Too bad you can't see our faces. d-20t.jpg (3230 bytes)
Looking down on the plain below (which was still hundreds of feet above the rivers), there were marvelous sights in every direction. d-33t.jpg (4706 bytes)d-27t.jpg (3911 bytes)d-35t.jpg (3908 bytes)
