Enjoying Cuba

Cabo Cruz

But time is running out. I need to move along. My next major stop is Santiago de Cuba, with an intermediate stop at Cabo Cruz. I try to stay well outside the Archipielago de los Jardines de la Riena, but the winds at times force me closer to the reef than I want to be.

I anchor off the leeward side of some mangroves about a mile away from Cabo Cruz. The channel is too shallow for me to proceed any farther. A diver soon swims out to my location with a huge lobster in his grasp. I am too tired to fuss with cooking a lobster, but I ask him about the availability of diesel. I tell him that I need 80 liters. "Si, Si" he assures me. "No problema."

When the Guarda come out later to check me in, I also ask them about diesel. "No es posible," is the response. "Va a Pilon."

Bad news. While Pilon, a small fishing village, is on the way to Santiago, it has a difficult, lengthy entrance. But not to worry. My entrepreneurial fisherman comes back in a row boat after dark with 80 liters of diesel. Let's hear it for free enterprise. Or greed. Right now I don't care. I have fuel.
